What Have I Done?

I sit alone in a corner of a crowded bar. No one seems to notice me as I sit staring at my whiskey glass. Nobody sees the pain on my face as the jukebox play the song “The Way It Used to be”. That song really follows me at any bar I go. Whenever I go, it seems to be played. There is no thing that will make me forget from the memories it brings back. I was once a bass guitarist with one of the world’s most successful band, The Doodly Blues (The Doodies). Now, in our 27th year, we are on another sell-out world tour and record sales have earned $300 million. That song is just one of many hits that have made each member of the band a millionaire, with private jets and luxury homes. Me, the name is Denver Yamaguchi, sitting, cherishing a drink in a shabby bar, knows that I was the man who threw it all away. I can only blame myself.

In our early years, I had been the founder member of the group, and our first years were exciting. From being a local band, we had become one of the newest new groups around. My life has moved into the fast lane. When The Doodies went on tour with the Beatles, it seemed that I was never in the same place for more than a few hours. The band would land in London in the middle of the night, take forty minutes’ sleep and then spend twelve hours preparing for a TV show. It was hard for all of us, but I found it almost impossible. The trouble was I was the only married member of the band. I also had a son, and I would fly back from abroad to be with my family if only for a couple of hours. Then I would be back on the road, to the fantastic, sparkling life of a rock star. Trying to live in two different worlds at once became a real stress. Things came to a head when the band recorded a version of a blues number called “Go Now”. It became an instant hit. Sarah, my wife, had just given birth to another boy named Paul, after out Beatle friend. However, the hit song meant more recording and more touring, and more time away from my family. I began to struggle about my future; surely, it was the best to get out now, while we were still at the top? Surely, the only way now could be down. Sarah was the other factor. She was stuck at home reading stories about the band’s wild parties, most of which were true, and it was getting to her. Cynthia Lennon (John’s wife) used to compare notes with her and Sarah would then give me a bad time. Finally, sitting in my London flat one day, listening to “Go Now”, I made the decision I felt sorry ever since. To quit the band. The next day I said goodbye to the people and walked out of the London recording studios an ex-rock star.

For the first few months later, life was great. I had a chance to enjoy my family for the first time. Money was no problem. With The Doodly Blues, I had been drawing $1000 a week just as pocket money, a wealth in those days. I had a nice place. My troubles were over. However, in less than twelve months, the money had run out. Bills began to mount up and we moved into a smaller flat, but that was not enough. Finally, I realized I would have to go back to work. I could not reenter the music world. My place in the band had been filled, and, besides, I had been out of the fame for a year, an ever and a day in the fast-moving pop scene. In desperation, I turned to a skill I learned when I left school at fifteen: carpentry. The day I started back at work as a carpenter was the darkest of his life. My brother had fixed me up with a job renovating an inn. At the end of the day, I hiked half a mile down the road in the pouring rain to the bus stop. Standing there, soaked, it seemed impossible to me that I had ever been with the band. “My God, what have I done?” I thought. “To think a year ago I was playing to 60 000 fans at London …” My despair was compounded the following year, when Sarah and I split up. The boys, Lee and Paul, stayed with me while I struggled to “make ends meet”.

The band did not fade into obscurity as I had forecast. Instead, The Doodies went from strength to strength with a succession of hits and albums. Today, I had earns about $2000 a week and lives with my elderly brother in London. I find it hard to forget that we could so easily be living in a Hollywood mansion. “Every day I hear something they did on the radio,” I admit. “And every time I ask myself: What if?” There is some relief for me in the way my boys have turned out, Lee, 27, is managing director of a successful graphic design company, and Paul, 25, and runs his own meat company. I said, “I suppose having an old man who turned his back on fortune must have encouraged them on.”

The group has not forgotten about me; I see them whenever they play in London. I am always invited backstage and there is lots of hugging and pats on my back. We get on so well. In some ways, nothing has changed because we really are the same people. The biggest difference is that afterwards they fly back to Florida in private jets, and I catch the bus back to London.

The Story of Our Love

We are lying on a big blanket under a sakura tree, with my fiancé. We are planning for our future married life, when our fathers and mothers-in-law just arrived.

“How’s the scenery here under this very memorable tree?” said my father-to-be.

“It was so wonderful… very wonderful, and beautiful, and … There is no word that suits my impression with this landscape. Even words are not enough…”

Suddenly …

“Oh, that’s my stomach. It says it is now hungry. Is it lunch time? Let us eat!”

Thank God! It is now lunchtime!

“Chow!”

“WAIT A SECOND! Do not forget to put God first in everything we do. Let us first thank God for our food, our blessings, and let us pray for the both of you, Sarah, and Denver, for a blessed wedding life, since your wedding is now getting near. Sarah, why won’t you lead the prayer?” my mother-to-be said.

“Ok. It will be a pleasure.”

“Thank you Lord… Amen. Let us eat!”

“CHOW!”

We had the specialties of our fathers and mothers-in-law that are prepared for our lunch under the sakura tree. That means we had four different dishes in our front. We are required to have all of these, and be able to taste the food that was being prepared.

We had some talk with everyone while eating. We had jokes, funny stories, or anything fun. When I finished eating, I went a little farther from them, thinking for my future life. After wedding, my name will now be Sarah Lynne Shacagawa – Yamaguchi. I will now going to be a part of the Yamaguchi Family, the family of my future husband. When my future husband noticed me that I went farther from them, he went by my side.

“Why are you here?”

“Ah, nothing. I am just reminiscing about our past times.”

“Ok… Oh, I know! Why won’t we reminisce together on how we first met until on this point, that we are now getting to be married?”

“A great idea! So, let’s get started!”

“WAIT, WAIT, WAIT! Why won’t you join your future mothers and fathers with what you are going to do?”

“Ah, all right.”

Both of us went nearer to them, and I began telling our love story.

“This is how the story of us started:

I was once a gym instructor. I am also the one who helps some people to lose weight. He (pointing to Denver) was fat before. I went at a coffee shop near the gym for a break, when I saw him entered the gym. When I saw him, I looked around, and I saw that no chair would be able to fit his body, because the chairs are too small for him. Therefore, I went to him, and greeted him. He greeted me back. We introduced ourselves, me going first. Then I told him as inoffensively as I could, but he did not mind about what I just said. Therefore, I leaved him and went back to the gym. I was getting farther to the coffee shop, when I heard a trembling sound. I turned back, and I saw him fell from the chair. I immediately ran towards him, and escorted him to the gym. I gave him clothes, because his clothes are wet because of spilled coffee. I also bought coffee for him. Because of that, I earned a new friend that day that turned out to be my future husband today …”

I took a sip from my cup of juice and continued storytelling.

“Ok. I will continue telling our story:

We turned out to be friends from the day we met. Instant friends, until we became best friends as time goes on.

One day, I am thinking of encouraging him to join my physical fitness program, even though I know that he would refuse it, because he told me once that, ‘I am contented with my body.’. However, I thought of offering it again, because I know it is for his own good and for the better him. Therefore, I approached him and offered him, but as I had expected, he refused my offer. I tried and tried, but he repeatedly refused. I turned emotional, and accidentally told him that one of the possible reasons why the girls he likes do not like him. It is because of his body, and his unhealthy habit. Therefore, I ran towards outside the gym, onto the trees, and sat on a bench and cried. Surprisingly, he did not follow me.

Two weeks had passed when we do not have the communication with each other. Then, he unexpectedly went to the gym, and after some realizations, he asked me to include him in my program, and asked for my forgiveness. I gladly included him, as a sign of my forgiveness.

At first, he was struggling very hard for the different exercises he must perform, including the avoidance of junk foods, eating too much, and eating so many things that are not good for him. Months had passed, when he was getting more and more physically fit; until he is now different from the old Denver that he was being satisfied with. Before, he said he was contented with his old body, but now, he is now more contented with his new shape. Before, he has a double chin, and a very big tummy, arms, and feet. Now, he has a six-pack abs and a very muscular arms and feet. However, at these times, I did not notice that I am already in love with him, but I kept it for myself the first time I felt it. However, I do not also know that he had feelings of love for me.

One time, he surprisingly went on my house. I was surprised because I did not expect him to come there, because he did not even know my address. He told me that he asked my friend at gym about on where I live. He went there with flowers. Days had passed, that he is going to my house, and giving me gifts, until one time he asked me to go for a dinner. I did not refuse to go, because I do not want him to get upset at me.

We were having a dinner at a fancy restaurant, with some instrumentalists playing some sort of soothing music. He confessed his feelings to me. Then, my strong feelings to him controlled me that time, so we became a couple. We became a couple for two years, and from being boyfriends and girlfriends, he asked me to marry him at the same restaurant, and at the same table. Once again, I was controlled by my strong feelings to him, and I gave my “Yes” to him.

For your additional information, of all the boys that liked me, and wooed me, Denver was the one who made my heart beat unexpectedly. Finally, that is it. El Finale.”

Then reactions and questions arose from my story, getting them to know us better with our story. Our moments from this day, our every second, every minute, goes on.

Will I Ever Find Her?

It’s been a long time since I first confessed my feelings for her. I still remembered that it was exactly 12:00 midnight. None of my efforts was a waste. She accepted me wholly. We were about to face the tough challenges in our lives together. Every breath I took, and every move I made. My life became worthy back then.

Our first six months was going fine. It felt like we were linked together as one. She was the most beautiful and the most gorgeous girl for me. She was incomparable with any girl in the world. That was how I was attracted to her. Even though I am not that good-looking, she saw me as one of them. Additionally, he saw me as a nice person inside and out. She was the first one who saw my true colors, since my parents did not even know much about my character. We really loved each other. We dedicated time for only the both of us.

One of the days that I will never forget was that Saturday when we went out for a dinner. Our happiness together filled the place. We felt like it was our time that night. When the romantic music played, we joined the other couples who took up the open spaces. It was very romantic that time. Love was indeed in the air.

Times had passed. We were very happy being together. I thought we were inseparable. However, our winds blew reversely on us, when our seventh month was approaching.

I never expected it to happen. She revealed the truth to me, in the midst of midnight of my birthday.

“I’m still in a relationship, when you confessed my feelings to me. I just felt sorry for you, since my friends told me that you are that willing to devote on me. I’m sorry…”

I really didn’t know what to say in that short span of time. I was really shocked. That happiness, that made me think that there was nothing that could come between us… that nothing, even death, would separate us…

In that span of time, I turned out to be like a robot. I did not cry nor didn’t I felt sorry. I didn’t felt sad, either.

That moment sank deep within me after some time. Instead of just wondering how my life was wasted, I took it as a tough lesson.

“Nothing lasts forever.”

Even relationships do not last forever.

Moving on takes time. It is like you are recovering yourself from paralysis.

Times had passed, when I had moved on, there is this feeling that I am ready to be engaged in love again. The question is, will I find my “the one” in this second time, or I will undergo so many heartbreaks before I could find my “the one”.

Where could I find her? When could I find her? Will I ever find her?
