“Demonic” Thoughts: Questions About the Devil

Where did the devil come from?
According to some of the verses from Revelation and Ezekiel, Satan was the model of faultlessness full of wisdom and flawless in beauty. He was in Eden, the garden of God. This character was associated with the “king of Tyre”, and was yet a “created” being. He was anointed as a guardian cherub, and destined by God. God positioned him in the Garden to be a guardian angel in the Garden. Though he was innocent when he was created, evil was found in him. He was never innocent since all men are sinners after the Adam’s fall. He was expelled by God from the “mount of God”. Because of his arrogance he was thrown to the earth. He was a good created being, an angel made for a holy and good purpose. He fell to sin and rebellion. When the devil fell, other angels fell with him from the heavenly kingdom and were thrown to the earth.

Are devils, or even Satan, a person or a characterization of evil?
Even if Satan convinced many people that he is not real, Satan absolutely is a real, personal creature, the source of all atheism and of every type of moral and spiritual evil in our world. He is called with different names in the Bible, including Satan, the devil, the serpent and others. When Jesus Christ came down to our world, he recognized Satan as the prince of our world.

Is there the reality behind selling someone’s soul to the devil?
There are some people that are suspected to be making a deal with the devil, in exchange for his body and soul, to receive mystical power and/or pleasures. But, according to the Bible, there is no occurrence of a person “selling his soul” to Satan, and it certainly not indicates that making a bargain with the devil is possible. Certainly, there are those who agonize under direct satanic control, and there are those who have devoted themselves to the devil. Though, the God’s power triumphs over Satan’s captivity.

Are demons really fallen angels?
God made everything good because God cannot create something bad. Consequently, when Satan, who was once the angel Lucifer, rebelled against God and fell from heaven, one third of the angelic host joined his rebellion (Revelation 12:3-4, 9), and these fallen angels are now known as the demons.

Is there a possibility that a Christian could be demon possessed/demonized?
The Bible does not explicitly said whether a Christian can be possessed by a demon; but related biblical facts made it clear that Christians cannot be demon possessed. There is a distinct difference between being possessed by a demon and being oppressed or influenced by a demon. Demon possession encompasses a demon having complete control over the thoughts and/or actions of a person. Demon oppression or influence encompasses a demon or demons attacking a person spiritually and/or encouraging him/her into sinful behaviour.
Some claim that a Christian can be demonized. Demonic influence and oppression are truths for Christians, but it is not biblical to say that a Christian can be possessed by a demon or demonized. Seeing a Christian exhibiting the behaviour of being demonized should cause us to question the realness of his/her faith. It should not cause us change our perspective on whether a Christian can be demon possessed / demonized. Possibly the person is a Christian but is harshly demon oppressed and/or suffering from severe psychological problems. But our experiences must meet the test of Scripture, not the other way around.

Why does not God give the fallen angels a chance to repent?
The Bible does not explicitly address the subject of fallen angels having a chance to repent, but we can gain some understanding from what the Bible say.
Satan was once the highest among the angels. Satan and all the angels were recurrently in God’s presence and had knowledge of the glory of God. Thus, they had no excuse for rebelling against God and turning away from Him. They were not tempted. Satan and the other angels rebelling against God in spite of what they knew was the greatest evil. Second, God did not provide a plan of redemption for the angels as He did for mankind. The fall of the human race necessitated an atoning sacrifice for sin, and God provided that sacrifice in Jesus Christ. In His grace, God redeemed the human race and brought glory to Himself.
No such sacrifice was intended for the angels. Furthermore, God mentioned to those angels who remain faithful to Him as His “elect angels” (1 Timothy 5:21). From the biblical principle of election, those whom God elects to salvation will be saved, and nothing can separate them from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39). Evidently, those angels who rebelled were not “elect angels” of God.
The Bible gives us no reason to consider that angels would repent even if God gave them the chance (1 Peter 5:8). The fallen angels seem completely devoted to opposing God and attacking God’s people. The Bible says that the harshness of God’s judgment varies according to how much knowledge a person possesses (Luke 12:48). The fallen angels, then, with the great knowledge they possessed, are greatly deserving of God’s wrath.

Can demons attach themselves to non-living/inanimate objects?
There is no biblical provision to the knowledge that demons can ascribe themselves to physical objects. This belief is actually part of gullible practices and occult beliefs found in animistic cultures and among those who practice the occult.

Is there activity of demonic spirits in the world today?
Ghosts, hauntings, crystal balls, and other “weird” things. They are captivating to many people because they seem to offer understanding into an unidentified world that lies beyond the limits of our physical life. To many, these things seem guiltless and harmless.
Several people who approach these matters from non-biblical viewpoints believe that ghosts are the spirits of dead people who have not gone on to the “next stage.” According to them, there are three different kinds of hauntings: residual hauntings, human spirits’ hauntings, and non-human spirits or demon interaction. These can cover-up as human spirits, but they are harmful and dangerous. Evil spirits, or demons, can actually possess people, lodging in them and governing them. The four Gospels and the Book of Acts record several cases of demon possession and of good angels appearing and helping followers. Angels, both good and bad, can cause supernatural phenomena to happen. God commanded us to have nothing to do with the occult, devil worship, or the impure spirit world. God deliberates these practices an abomination, and those who include themselves in such things summons disaster. Some paranormal activity can be accredited to the work of frauds. It would seem best to recognize other ghosts and hauntings report as the demons’ work. Sometimes these demons may make no attempt to cover their nature, and at other times they may use trickery, seeming as incorporeal human spirits. Such trickery leads to more falsehoods and misperception.

Divorce in The Philippines: Should It Be Legalized?

Divorce (or the dissolution of marriage) is the final termination of a marital union, canceling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds of matrimony between the parties (unlike annulment, which declares the marriage null and void). Divorce laws vary considerably around the world, but in most countries it requires the sanction of a court or other authority in a legal process. The legal process of divorce may also involve issues of alimony (spousal support), child custody, child support, distribution of property, and division of debt.

(Source: Wikipedia)

In countries like the Philippines, divorce is not welcomed by the culture. Why? One major thing. Religion. Even though the Church, the Catholic Church for that matter, since it actively opposes divorce legalization in the country, I will have my firm stand towards divorce legalization.
Come to think of it. What if the love betwen that couple becomes weak and susceptible as time goes by? What if the couples’ decisions to marry is not a decision out of love; maybe it was an impulsive decision made, thus with no assessment of the moments that may have occured? What if the love that the couples share with each other changed? As we all know, everything changes, whether you like it or not. It is constant. Even our love for someone changes because of some reasons. Most of the people actually make decisions too quick because our world is in a fast-paced state. In our world today, some of the decisions about marrying a person do not come from the couple themselves because the decisions are affected also influenced by some social forces, like their parents (arranged marriages). Eventually, the married couple will most likely have many problems, regarding their marriage and their family, if they will going to have one. Therefore, when a couple gets into this kind of situation, one of their options to solve the problem will be divorce.

Most Filipinos, especially the rich ones, will do whatever it may take them; even change their citizenship, just to get out of marriage problems. For those who cannot afford the whole process will most probably be stuck in the situation and may acquire more problems in the future.

Another reason why divorce should be implemented here in our country is that marital problems are distressing for the members of the family, especially the victimized spouse and children. According to some statistics, the main reason of broken marriages is physical violence. Husbands fight on their wives, and abandon their children so they could live with his another girl. At the end of the day, the victims are forced to continue living in this kind of situation, especially the children. Eventually, when they grow up, most of them will have that kind of distressing situation that they had all the way, when they were still young. This kind of problem will most probably create more broken families in the future. By implementing the divorce in the Philippines, the probability of having broken families in the future will decrease, and that is for sure.

Annulment, which is now permitted in our country, has its drawbacks. Annulment takes a longer time to progression and may cost higher than divorce. Our country comprises half of its population with poor families, which do not have enough income to sustain their daily needs. Therefore, most Filipinos will not be able to afford the very high price of annulment, in case they will have marital problems. In the end, most of the poor Filipinos will be trapped in their marriage problems.

Divorce is better than married to a partner that commits adultery. Children cannot understand the situation that is why you should explain it to them the reason. People are not perfect. We are only human, not gods. We sometimes make wrong decisions, because we were deceived, fooled, tricked. People will only show their dark side during the married life. Divorce is not a joke, it’s an opportunity for people to have a second chance to learn from our mistakes and a second chance in life to be happy.

We need this to be implemented. We are living in the 21st century. We should live updated.

“When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favor in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.”

Biotechnology: It is A FRIEND (in terms of agriculture)

Biotechnology (a. k. a. “biotech”) is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make useful products, and it is usually seen in agriculture, food production and medicine production. Modern use of similar terms includes genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue culture technologies. The concept encompasses a wide range of procedures (and history) for modifying living organisms according to human purposes — going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of plants, and “improvements” to these through breeding programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization. (Source: Wikipedia)

Biotechnology ust be thought as beneficial for the life on Earth, since it improves the quality of life, and there are so many factor that benefits us and suits us to live on Earth happily ever after. Several purposes of using biotechnology in agriculture are related with the decrease of poverty. Presenting the genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) into agriculture is predicted to increase rural incomes, sustain production in resource-poor areas, and provide more nutritious foods. Devotees of the use of biotechnology in food production believe that developed nations with technology have a social and political responsibility to assist these poorer nations. In India, Vietnam, and Kenya, unhealthy vegetable crops and trees can benefit from genetically produced bio-pesticides. Problems with a lack of clean and pure seeds and planting material can be solved by using bio-pesticides, which allow for indulgence in the purity of the seeds and planting material. In this way, GMOs can potentially provide a way for high-resistance and high-yielding crops. Biotechnology can also subsidize to supporting the food production in areas that have less resources. Drought, pests, and acidic soil often cause harmful problems to farming, but insect resistance and toxic tolerance can avoid these from attacking the food-producing plants. The ability to provide a full farming season through using GMOs to assist in the production of larger quantities of food for these farmers helps to ensure a profit¬able growing and harvesting season. GMOs can contribute to generating  foods with higher nutrient content, most commonly being used to rice. The people in some countries rely heavily on rice in their diets, but rice alone does not provide the necessary nutrients for a balanced diet. Vitamins, such as Vitamin genetically engineered into what is commonly referred to as “Golden Rice.” Finally, farmers can have great use of transgenic methods in their agriculture with the aims of both guaranteeing food security and increasing the competitiveness of their crops. Biotechnology companies and supporters of the use of GMOs believe that there is a political responsibility to assist in the security and well-being of farmers who supply goods to more developed countries.

Church and State: Separated or United (in terms of Political Power)?

The separation of church and state is the distance in the relationship between organized religion and the nation state. (Source: Wikipedia)

Church and state are separated, and must maintain to be separated. A complete separation prevents the clerical partnership to be existing in the life of society and deprives the state from an important contribution.

It is possible to speak about a politically involved Church as long as associations to various parties are evaded. For this reason, the attendance of clergy in electoral campaigns must be banned. The clerical representatives must defend and serve the interests of the Church and not private purposes. Priests can also have personal political principles but they are not allowed to recommend them as godly ideals. The political message must be limited to the recommendation of civil duties. Religious representatives must be present in Parliament, express their opinions, and attempt to give a Christian spot to the different laws. They cannot express their feelings just through sermons and protest marches. However, there are two conditions. On the one hand, they must know exactly the limits of permitted influence, without trying to replace the civil system. History has proven that the sinful human society cannot be ruled only according to the Gospel. Restrictive laws and compulsion are necessary in order to prevent anarchy, but they must not be administrated by the clerical structures. The Church must have the liberty to react when its interests and Christian principles are violated. The democratic republic seems more suitable to Christian values.

Does It Even Bother?

It has been quite a while since I first set foot on our school. In my stay here, I have observed some things that disappoint me a lot. I never expected that an elementary student would be doing those things.

One time, while waiting for the school gates to open, I saw a schoolmate smoking. Maybe you will say, “There’s nothing wrong with smoking, it is normal!” Yes, it is normal, but the next thing I saw was the issue. While he was smoking, one of our school teachers passed by and I thought that my schoolmate will show respect and stop smoking, but it was wrong. The student continued puffing his cigarette as if an ordinary person just passed.

The school gates were opened and I sat on a bench and chatted with my friends while waiting for the bell to ring. Then the bell rang, and says that we must proceed to our classrooms. However, before leaving the bench, I felt something sticky on my back. I wondered why my friends kept laughing at me. I tried to reach my back and remove that sticky thing. Yuck! A bubble gum! I didn’t know how to react on this incident. Will I laugh at myself, or get mad at that someone who stuck the bubble gum on the wall? Trash cans are visible around, but why can’t they put their wastes in their right places? Well, I just took it as nothing. I don’t want to start my day with anger anyway.

The class had already started and the reporters posted their visual aids and now are ready to give their best on reporting. As the reporter discussed his report, not one of us in the classroom seemed to understand it. Our teacher asked the reporter to elaborate on his report for us to understand what he is discussing but he answered, “Hindi ko alam, yun nga yung nasa book eh!” This caused uproar inside the room. Everybody laughed aloud including me. I turned around at our teacher and I saw him smiling but I know that he was hurt by the indecent answer of the reporter and that made the whole class felt sorry. When we are asked by our teachers to explain what we are discussing, they are just trying to squeeze our minds to see the best we have but they don’t intend to embarrass us.

Whenever I enter our classroom, I noticed some graffiti written on walls especially on the chairs, which made our rooms look dirty and uncomfortable. Although our school janitor always cleans our ground every day, it still looks messy because some students keep on vandalizing it. I don’t understand why the students kept on writing strange words especially symbols, which not everyone can read anyway. It is surprising how those students acted like that, vandalizing school facilities. They should always keep in mind that what they do reflect on their personality.

The next day, the school was unusually quiet so I checked up what’s going on inside. As I went on, everybody was so busy reviewing his or her notes because it was the examination day, one of the most stressing and scariest days in a student’s life. Suddenly, the bell rang which signals the start of the exam. Before we started, our teacher explained the instructions in answering the exams and he made it clear that, “Anyone caught cheating will automatically zero on the exam”. While we were having our exam, I constantly kept hearing people murmuring at the back and even in front. They kept on asking, “Hoy, anong sagot dito?” It was very irritating and distracting on my part because I couldn’t concentrate on answering. I admit that some people taking exams are doing and experiencing cheating while answering their questionnaires. As the saying goes, “Kung gusto may paraan, kung ayaw, maraming dahilan”.

Did you have observed, or experienced these things? Do you really even bother about these things? I know that many have observed those things too but some did not even bother about it. If we cannot discipline ourselves, let us at least try to respect our school.

What If Superheroes Were Really True?

“It’s a bird, it’s a plane. No, it’s Superman!”  Superman is one of the famous superheroes we all know. Here also comes Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and other members of what so called “The Justice League”, a group of superheroes having numerous heroes.  We also have the recent group of superheroes that appeared in cinemas that comprises of Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, The Incredible Hulk, Hawkeye, and Ironman. However, these superheroes are all fictional. They do not really exist in our world. However, what if they really are not fictional, and they exist in our real world?

A superhero is a fictional character, which has extraordinary or superhuman powers and uses them to fight crime or evil. In our real world, they do not really exist, except from being fictional, we know that there are only plants, animals, and man living in our world. They only exist in the fictional world, and in our imaginative and creative world. Because of their powers, they maintain the peace and order in our world.

Let us imagine the imagery of our real world when superheroes are there. “Superman to the rescue!” “Batman to the rescue!” If they are really superheroes, we were very confident of our safety in the world, because their powers will be able to destroy anything that will disturb the peace, order, and the harmony of living. They could be also a great big help for other peace and order workers (e.g. the police officers, the soldiers, and the government). They are the only ones who could confront the bad villains (e.g. Joker, Lex Luther) because the powers of the human cannot deal with the powers of the villains, which they would be able to do. We can rely on them for our safety.

However, not all the effects of the existence of superheroes in our real world are benefits. There are also drawbacks that they can be engaged. Since they have these supernatural powers, we would count on everything to them. We will increase our reliance with them. We will not be going to stand on our own feet. They will also make other people’s jobs to be useless, as the superheroes will take over the purpose of our own police officers, soldiers, and other peace workers.

Other than reliance to them and taking over of jobs, superheroes can also be abusive of their powers, and they could cause the total destruction of our home planet. Since they can rule the humankind, because of their powers, they could use this power to make us slaves. They will make us think that they are a very far higher than the humankind. They could also cause total destruction of our planet, because of two reasons. The Earth can be a battlefield for superheroes and for their counterpart, the super villains, which have also supernatural powers. They are also able to destroy Earth by their powers, for some reasons.

Superheroes, as we all know, that they do not really exist in the world we are in. it is not important, if they exist or not. The real, big deal is, we can live together in harmony, with or without them. We will try our very best to maintain this harmony of living, and preserve life, and the Earth.

Memoirs For Last Glimpse of 2012

A Memoir for November

“NO PROM? WHAT?” A question that went viral in these days. Our school administrators, particularly our campus director, decided that there would be no prom for the school year. There were different reactions prior to that.
But, thank God, the sadness was now ended. There was a hint that there would be a possibility for the prom to push through. Our campus director went classroom-to-classroom to explain and asked the third year students about the issue. My batch mates were given the chance to express their viewpoints about the issue. And one day, there was an announcement, telling that the prom will be pushed through. Our schoolmates felt like the thorn embedded in their hearts was finally removed because of that news. Because of the fact that the prom will be pushed through, some of the boys are now preparing for inviting someone they liked to be their date in the prom. Woo-hoo!

A Memoir for December

Christmas season is in the air. The phrase “Merry Christmas” went viral, as it were evey year. But this is not only the main event in our school, because the boys had appeared now, with a handsome look and their gifts brought for the girl whom they would ask to go to prom with them. So, it is not only the Christmas season, and the Christmas breeze are in the air. We also had the ask-for-someone-to-be-prom-date breeze in the atmosphere.
Season’s Greetings! It’s Christmas Party. I’m so glad that one item in my wish list are now in my hands! I had received a silver cross pendant that I really wanted so long. My Christmas vacation, you say… nah, it’s too long to tell the story. I’ll just give you the summary. I had learned many things in the province.
